About the Washington County League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 as a nonpartisan organization to inform the electorate and increase citizen participation in government. The Washington County League of Women Voters was organized in 1920 by Mrs. H. E. Morrow, Mrs. A. M. Harding, Mrs. A. H. Markie, Mrs. J. H. Adler, Mrs. W. S. Gregson, Mrs. F. G. Baender, and Mrs. J. C. Futrall. Since the 1950s the Washington County League has sought to improve city and county government, land use planning, housing, education, voting procedures, and other items of concern.

About the Collection

The Washington County League of Women Voters Records contain original and photocopied versions of administrative records (annual reports, correspondence, minutes, and treasurer's reports). The records also include a collection of administrative records and research notes kept by Lilie Johnson, the League's secretary from 1970 to 1975. These records may have been used as primary source material for League position papers. Lilie Johnson's records also include a collection of sample note cards advocating women's rights and a collection of political memorabilia.

The records also contain research notes gathered by and disseminated among League members in order to debate and clarify policy on local issues. Research notes include handwritten notes and newspaper clippings. For early activities of the Washington County League of Women Voters, see MC 333, League of Women Voters of Washington County, which spans the years 1920 to 1978.
See also the Washington County League of Women Voters Addendum (MC 965).

Marion E. Wyckoff, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, donated these records to Special Collections on October 22, 1986.

Processed by Anthony J. Wappel, Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in November 1988.
