Manuscript Collection 1077

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Items pertaining to B.F. Little of Washington County were donated to Special Collections by Janelle Swift Brashears on June 11, 1990.

Benjamin F. Little was the first Republican sheriff of Washington County, serving from 1868 until 1872.  He was born in Bedford County, Tennessee on September 13, 1839, and came to Arkansas when his parents settled in Washington County around 1851.  During the Civil War he served in Company D, 1st Arkansas Cavalry, United States Volunteers.  He died sometime after 1895.  A biographical sketch of Little may be found in History of Washington County (1989).

The papers contain items pertaining to Little's attempt to receive a pension for his Civil War service, other financial records (including tax receipts), and items relating to his duties as sheriff.  Also included are materials about his son-in-law, C.E. Swift.

Processed by Leon C. Miller, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in October 1990.
