John Hudelson Ganner was born November 17, 1864, in England. He
came to the United States in 1881 and to Russellville in 1887. On
February 16, 1892, he married Alberta Russell (1873-1952;
frequently identified as Bert or Bertie), granddaughter of Dr.
Thomas A. Russell, for whom Russellville was named. Her sister,
Anna May Russell (born July 13, 1876, and usually called May,
sometimes spelled Mae), was also a photographer and apparently
took over the Ganner Studio when her brother-in-law retired,
probably in the mid-1920s. The Ganner children included John
Russell (1892-1979), Claude Neil (1896-1978; the donor's
grandfather), Harold Lee (1900-1965), and Elizabeth Rose (1903-1985). Ganner died July 3,
1948, and May Russell died June 25,
1969.
According to the donor, the collection covers mostly Pope and
Yell counties, Russellville, Dardanelle, Ozark, and Conway. Most
of the material is unidentified or only partially identified.
Most portraits, both glass and film negatives, have been
retouched, apparently with pencil. Instructions on one envelope
(image 1443) include the note, "This retouching is nothing but an
oil pencil[;] rub off with cotton or soft cloth."
Negatives, prints, and movies made by the owners of the Ganner
Studio, Russellville, Arkansas, were donated to Special
Collections by Elizabeth Montambault of Jackson, Mississippi, in
April 1995. The donor is the great-granddaughter of John H.
Ganner, a Russellville photographer.
The collection consists almost entirely of negatives: 302 glass
plate negatives (only a few dated, these from 1900 to 1909) and
about 2600 film negatives (dated from 1912 to 1951, most dated in
the 1930s and 1940s). The collection also includes movies, prints
(61 vintage prints and 102 prints made in the course of
processing), correspondence, and other papers.
RESTRICTIONS APPLY. The donor retains
applicable copyrights during her lifetime, after which the rights
revert to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, with the
stipulation that any financial rewards from these rights be
turned over to the Women's Athletics program for its swimming
team. Glass plate negatives are restricted due to fragility. The
movies are restricted due to their poor condition; a videotape
made from them is available to researchers.

Series 1. Glass Plate Negatives, ca.
1890-1930. Boxes 1-15 (images 1-302).
Restrictions apply. Because of their fragility, glass plate
negatives are not available to researchers without special
permission. Prints have been made of some of them; they are in
Series 5, Subseries 2, arranged by image number.
Aside from five (possibly six) negatives labeled "Dunlap
negatives," four noted as "Beattie negs," and one "made by
Strickland," all the glass plate negatives were probably made by
John H. Ganner. Six of the glass plate negatives were so badly
deteriorated that the image was lost; these were discarded. Some
damaged negatives were included if key parts of the image were
intact.
Most of the plates are not quite standard size. Measurements are
given in inches, height first, then width. Although some of the
plates actually contain two or more separate images (usually
multiple exposures of the same subject), each plate is numbered
as one image. A few of the plates are broken and stored in two
separate envelopes; these are designated "a" and "b."
Identifications or descriptions in quotation marks were
originally written on the plate itself or on the envelopes
containing the plates. Those envelopes were crumbling and some
were destroyed to free the plates. Many photocopies of envelopes
are in Series 4 by image number. Because the negatives are not
generally available and so few prints have been made,
descriptions of the images are more detailed than usual.

Series 2. Film Negatives, 1912-1951.
Boxes 16-18 (images 303-2894).
Film negatives are available to researchers, so long as the
negatives are not removed from their protective sleeves.
The photographer is usually not identified. Some of the negatives
were probably made by John H. Ganner; most of the studio
portraits from the 1930s and 1940s were probably May Russell's;
the family photographs may have been taken by Ganner, Russell, or
the Ganner children or grandchildren.
Some 150 of them were cellulose nitrate negatives, which have
been disposed of. Prints have been made of 50 nitrate negatives,
as well as of a few of the safety film negatives. Many of the
safety film negatives were badly deteriorated. A few were kept
and an attempt was made to separate the emulsion of some from the
backing, but most were discarded. In all, some 500 safety film
negatives of the studio portraits and 825 of the family pictures
were discarded because of the condition of the negative, the lack
of identification, or the repetitiveness of the images. All
prints from any of the negatives are in Series 5, Subseries 2, by
image number. In the case of nitrate negatives for which prints
were made, the image numbering sequence continues as though a
negative still existed, although it does not (hence there are
gaps in the negative files). The image number (marked with an
asterisk in the index of names and
elsewhere in the finding aid) will be found on the print and on
the envelope, if any.
Subseries 1. Studio Portraits (images
303-1738).
Most of the negatives were in envelopes, usually with a name and
printing information on the envelope, occasionally accompanied by
correspondence. Most of the portraits were identified by name,
although the name may be that of the customer rather than
that of the subject. In many cases, more than one name was on the
envelope. Although an attempt was made to identify each negative
with one name, usually it was not possible. The index of names contains all the names
on the envelopes, with a (?) to denote a possible link of name
with image number.
Ganner Studio apparently did not have an enlarger; the negatives
were sent elsewhere for prints to be made and--frequently--toned,
hand-colored, vignetted, or otherwise customized. Instructions
for such special work, as well as basic information (size and
type of print, paper to be used, number of prints wanted, etc.),
was frequently written on the envelope. Other information on
envelopes may include a "lot number," the date, the studio to
which the negative was sent, the cost, and the address to whom
the prints were to be sent. If the envelope had no significant
information written on it, the date (if any) was included in the
index entry and the envelope discarded. Envelopes with more
information were saved (or photocopied if they were badly
deteriorated) and are in Series 4 arranged by image number. In
some cases printing instructions included correspondence or
samples of cloth or hair; such items are also in Series 4.
In addition to making portraits of sitters in the studio, Ganner
Studios also copied photographs for customers or arranged for the
printing of old negatives.
Almost all of the studio portraits (in good condition) that could
be linked even tentatively to a name were saved. These are images
303-1660. The studio portraits with no identification at all were
saved only if there was something of interest in the photograph
or in the information that accompanied it. Of note among the
unidentified photographs (images 1661-1738) are four made for a
combination photoprint (images 1702-1705), one of a flower-covered coffin (1736), and a copy
of a group portrait, from which
an individual portrait was enlarged (1738; see also
correspondence in Series 4 and prints in Series 5).

Subseries 2. Family Pictures (images
1739-2894).
Many of these negatives were in envelopes with some sort of
(usually incomplete) identification. In some cases the name on
the envelope appears to be the name of the photographer, usually
a Ganner child or grandchild. John H. Ganner probably took the
sets of early twentieth-century trips to the west.
Portraits, formal and informal, identified by name have been
added to the index of names. When
only a first name or nickname has been given, the name is
enclosed in quotation marks unless the person could be identified
("Sister," for example, has been identified as Elizabeth Rose
Ganner). In some cases, a box or envelope of negatives was
identified by name, but the negatives included a variety of
subjects. In these cases, the image numbers have been added to
the index under the name given and a short description of subject
matter has been added within square brackets. In these cases, the
name given may be the name of the photographer. Most of the
negatives were in envelopes with a short description of contents
on the envelope; all such notes are included in the name index as
they are with the studio portraits. Likewise, an asterisk
indicates a nitrate negative that has been printed.
When a group of photographs could not be confidently associated
with a name or when a subject seemed more important than the
name, a description was given below as part of the box inventory.
The majority of the descriptions below were originally written on
the envelopes; those added by the processor are enclosed by
square brackets.

Series 3. Movies, ca. 1920s. Box
18 (videotape 1).
Restrictions apply. The original films are restricted due to
their poor condition. A videotape made from the movies is
available to researchers.
The collection included 13 reels of 16 mm movie films, each of 2
to 2.5 minutes' duration, and numbered I-XIV (two films were
numbered IX and numbers VI and VIII were missing). Original
order, based on the I-XIV numbers, was maintained on the tape.
The films are apparently home movies, showing family and friends,
houses and other buildings in Russellville, local scenery, and
farm work. Some scenes appear to have been planned and acted out.
They are undated.

Series 4. Correspondence and Other
Papers, undated and 1930s - 1950s. Boxes 19-20.
Most of the negatives were in envelopes, many with information
written on the outside. This series includes many of those
envelopes (or photocopies of envelopes) as well as correspondence
and other papers.
Ganner Studio apparently did not have an enlarger; the negatives
were sent elsewhere for prints to be made and--frequently--toned,
hand-colored, vignetted, or otherwise customized. Detailed
instructions for such work sometimes required notes or letters
rather than (or in addition to) instructions written on the
envelope. In these cases such correspondence is in this series,
keyed to the appropriate negative in Series 2 by image number. A
few envelopes or notes were saved and added to the collection
without an image number because the corresponding negatives were
missing or destroyed.
The other papers include one of John H. Ganner's business cards.
Box 19
- Photocopies of envelopes from glass plate negatives (images
1-302).
- Envelopes and other correspondence for images 304-399.

Series 5. Prints. Box 21 (images 1-2894, new images
2895-2920).
The collection includes both vintage prints (made at about the
same time the negatives were made) and prints made in the course
of processing the collection.
Subseries 1. Prints without Negatives
(images 2895-2920).
These prints, some of them originally in frames, were included in
the collection. Most were unidentified and apparently not Ganner
Studio photographs. Additional prints without negatives include
many that were originally with Ganner family negatives,
apparently taken by members of the Ganner family, but could not
be matched with existing negatives in the collection.
These prints are numbered to continue the numerical sequence
begun with the negative image numbers.
Box 21
- Images 2895-2901. Unidentified portraits, group portraits.
Images 2895 (dated 1924) and 2896 are of a football team
(Arkansas Tech?) and include Paul Jones Leming.
- Images 2902-2920. Prints originally with Ganner family
negatives.
Subseries 2. Prints from Ganner Studio
Negatives.
Many of the vintage prints are contact prints and were with the
negatives when Special Collections received the collection.
Prints made in the course of processing are also contact prints
and made as examples of images (especially of the restricted
glass plate negatives) or to replace cellulose nitrate negatives.
All these prints have been given the same image number as the
negatives (or as the negatives would have had, in the case of
discarded nitrate negatives) and arranged in numerical order.
They are not inventoried because presumably prints may be made
from more negatives and added to the collection at any time.
3. Images 1-302. Prints--glass plate negatives.
4. Images 303-1000. Prints--studio portraits.
5. Images 1001-1550. Prints--studio portraits.
6. Images 1551-1738. Prints--studio portraits.
7. Images 1739-2894. Prints--family pictures.
