INFORMATION ABOUT AUGUST BARNWELL CLARK
August Barnwell Clark was born August 31, 1877 near Nashville, Arkansas. He moved to Texarkana, Arkansas in 1920, and was elected to fill the unexpired term of mayor in 1931. Winning election to a full term in 1932, he served in that capacity until 1934.
In 1933 Clark was appointed assistant manager of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation, supervising the southwest region of Arkansas. He resigned from that position in 1935 to become secretary of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Texarkana, a position he held until his death in 1940.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION
The material consists of correspondence and documents relating to Clark's careers and political interests in the area. A large portion concerns political appointments and Clark's ties to Senator Hattie W. Caraway and Congressman Ben Cravens. Also included are several newspaper clippings (primarily obituaries of Clark) and one broadside (folder 4) concerning the national elections of 1932.
Letters and papers pertaining to August Barnwell (Barney) Clark were donated to Special Collections by his daughter, Georgia H. Clark of Fayetteville, Arkansas, February 10, 1986.

Correspondence and documents accumulated during Clark's brief career as assistant manager of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation. Much of the correspondence is with Senator Hattie W. Caraway, Congressman Ben Cravens, and Garrett Whiteside, secretary to Senator Caraway, concerning political matters and federal appointments. The controversy over Clark holding this position while serving as mayor of Texarkana is also included, as is his resignation as mayor.
