Open Access Week
October 19-23 will mark the first international Open Access Week.
Open Access Week is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public. The now-annual event has been expanded from a single day to accommodate widespread global interest in the movement toward open, public access to scholarly research results.
What is open access?
Open Access generally refers to free online access to scholarly materials without restrictions. Free access is usually possible because authors self-archive their scholarly material or provide access to them through an institutional repository. Some high-impact journals such as the Public Library of Science titles (i.e., PLoS Biology, PloS Medicine, etc.) provide articles free of charge while others offer articles free of charge after an embargo period.
Want to know more? You can read about open access initiatives at organizations such as the Association of Research Libraries' SPARC, the National Institutes of Health, and Britain's JISC or visit directories of open access materials such as the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
Or, you can watch a two-minute video:

Commonwealth College Fortnightly, now Online

Thanks to a gift from Professor Stephen A. Smith, the Special Collections department has digitized a nearly complete run of the college newspaper for Commonwealth College. The Commonwealth College Fortnightly was issued at Commonwealth College in Mena, Arkansas from Volume 2, -Number 1 January 1, 1926 through Volume 14, Number 5 March 15,1938.
Commonwealth College was established in 1923 at the Newllano Cooperative Colony (near Leesville, Louisiana) to promote labor education and especially to educate leaders for the labor movement. Due to clashes among strong personalities and conflicting priorities, the college was soon looking for a new home. Commonwealth College moved to a temporary location in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas, in December 1924. On April 19, 1925, the school moved to a permanent location thirteen miles west of Mena.
You can read more about the history of the college, and find links to published and manuscript resources for more information, on the Special Collections web site.

Index Arkansas Expansion

The Happy Hollow Foundation,of Fayetteville, awarded a $58,500 grant to expand the Index Arkansas coverage from 1986-2008, adding 14,000 citations, raising the total to 105,000!
Indexing for several journals now extends through 2009; these include:
- Benton County Pioneer
- Flashback (Washington County Historical Society)
- Jefferson County Historical Quarterly
- Historical Bulletin (Grand Prairie Historical Society)
- Pope County Historical Association Quarterly
- Pulaski County Historical Review
Index Arkansas evolved from an old-fashioned card file started in the 1930s to an online index available through the Libraries’ web site. It contains almost 95,000 citations from Arkansas-related biographical and historical books, Arkansas periodicals, county historical journals, as well as statewide and regional newspapers.
Get Scared @ Your Library
Looking for some Halloween treats? Something spine-tingling to get you in the mood? Check out some of these library resources:
First stop? Try the library catalog, InfoLinks, for works by the masters of horror such as Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, or Shirley Jackson. Or, read up on your Halloween history with books on the Salem Witch Trials, the Halloween holiday, or ghosts. You'll also find chapters on Halloween customs in some of our reference dictionaries and encyclopedias, such as A Dictionary of Days, The Folklore of American Holidays, or A Dictionary of Superstitions. |
|
Halloween and the paranormal show up in a surprising number of journal article databases. Both JSTOR and Project Muse feature a number of folklore journals, where you might find articles such as "Trick or Treat? Halloween Lore, Passive Consumerism, and the Candy Industry," or "Tam Lin, Fair Janet, and the Sexual Revolution: Traditional Ballads, Fairy Tales, and Twentieth-Century Children's Literature."

For the skeptics, PsycINFO indexes research on topics such as belief in extraterrestrials, the subconscious and the paranormal. Try subject headings or keywords such as "Parapsychology," "Witchcraft," or "Vampires." The MLA International Bibliography is well-known for its coverage of literature, but it also indexes articles and dissertations on film and folklore studies. Search here for scholarly articles on the horror film, vampires in literature, or Halloween folklore. Web Of Science indexes top journals in a variety of disciplines. A quick search for Halloween locates "Lead contamination of inexpensive seasonal and holiday products" and "Pediatric nasal foreign body." Ewwww. Now, that's scary! |

Want to go back... way back? Visit Early English Books Online (EEBO) for early modern works on witchcraft, magic, ghosts, and poltergeists. This amazing collection features every book, pamphlet, and broadside printed in England up until 1700. Or, just return to your childhood with juvenile books from our Learning Resources for Children (LRC) collection. Located on Level 3 east of Mullins Library, the LRC collection offers a selection of ghoulish goodies, including Bunnicula, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and In the Witch's Kitchen: Poems for Halloween. |
Finally, join us on October 29th for a real-life Fayetteville ghost story. October is American Archives Month, and the University Libraries’ Special Collections department is commemorating the month by hosting an open house in Special Collections, Mullins Library room 130, on October 29, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. At 3:30 pm, Stephen J. Chism will offer a talk, “How a Library Newsletter Changed My Life: Special Collections and My Research for The Afterlife of Leslie Stringfellow.” Chism, local author and a reference librarian at the University of Arkansas Libraries, describes his re-publication of a little known book of local history contained in Special Collections that recounts a family’s experiences in talking with the dead. |
