The diary fragment and letters were donated by Roy G. Hucheson,
West Fork, November 9, 1977.
The material consists of a diary fragment, "Sketches of a
journey from Camden [New York] to [Peoria County?] Illinois,"
written by an unknown woman, June 13 - November 6,1837. Also
included in the collection are eleven Civil War letters (most of
them written by M. E. Barnes, a member of the Army of the
Cumberland, later called the Army of Georgia), an envelope, and
an unsigned poem.
RESTRICTIONS APPLY. Item
number 1, the diary fragment, is fragile. Positive photocopy
available for research. Use of the original material requires
special permission.

journey. The diary was apparently sent back to Camden, and new
entries made by someone else January 1 - November 29, 1845.

Gayesville Ala.") to parents (with P. S. signed "Melzar").
- November 7, 1864. Letter, Melzar (Kingston, Ga.) to father.
- December 21-25, 1864. Letter, Melzar ("In Camp before
Savannah, Ga.") to parents.
- January 11, 1865. Letter, Melzar (in camp near Savannah, Ga.)
to parents.
- January 25, 1865. Letter, Melzar (in camp near Sisters Ferry,
Ga.) to mother.
- April 22, 1865. Letter, Melzar (Holly Springs, N. C.) to
mother.
- Postmarked May 12 (no year). Envelope addressed to M. R.
Barnes, Lee Centre, Lee Co., Illinois. Stamp has been removed.
- No date. Poem, unsigned, beginning, "And so you say that Im a
fool."
