The Collection

The Mary D. Hudgins Arkansas Music Collection is an open-ended collection of printed and manuscript sheet music first assembled by Miss Hudgins during her lengthy career. The criteria for inclusion into her collection includes the following points:
  1. Born in Arkansas and resided here until 15 years old.
  2. Having spent at least 15 of the first 25 years of life in Arkansas.
  3. Living in the state during the production of the item.
  4. Items by non-Arkansans, but about Arkansas.
  5. Music published in Arkansas before 1925.
  6. Qualifications refer to both composers and lyricists.
Additions to the collection conform to these points with the following exceptions. 1925 is no longer the cut-off date for Arkansas published music, and the qualifications refer to arrangers as well as composers and lyricists. Hudgins initially kept the collection in folders interfiled with information about the particular pieces or their creators. By the time of the donation these folders were in disarray, and it is not clear that all of the 668 individual pieces originally in the Arkansas collection conformed to Hudgins's criteria. Hudgins had also collected a great quantity of antique sheet music that had nothing to do with Arkansas, and it is possible that some of these pieces became jumbled with the Arkansas music. No attempt has been made during processing to verify the Arkansas connection for these first 668 pieces, but subsequent additions will be subject to the six points mentioned above. The music is arranged alphabetically by composer or title, with numbers assigned to each piece based on the order in which it was entered into the database. As a result, the numbers do not sequentially follow the alphabetic order. Any piece bearing a number greater than 686 has been added by Special Collections.

The entire collection has been entered into a database using the ProCite software package and is available in Special Collections for electronic searching. Information in the "notes" field includes Hudgins's original folder notations. This collection was processed using funds from an endowment left to the University of Arkansas by Mary D. Hudgins.
