Series 1. Glass plate negatives, ca.
1920s - 1930s. Boxes 90-98.
Many of the photographs are from "Too Cute Studio" in Hot
Springs. Too Cute featured humorous props for tourist poses, as
well as formal poses. Of particular interest are the photos of
Indians, in both formal and tourist poses. According to Michael
Hoffmann, Department of Anthropology, University of Arkansas,
Fayetteville, the Indians were probably
- "part of a family of well-to-do Oklahoma Indians who were
visiting for the baths. My guess would be Quapaw or Osage who had
the mineral (the former group) or oil money by the 1920s. I know
that Quapaw families frequently visited Hot Springs in the first
third of this century. The fringed shawls look right for the
1920s."
Too Cute Studio also made group portraits for conventions and
documented such events as fires and floods.
Some photographs are of other photographs or published images.
Three of the plates housed with the 8" x 10" plates (189, 213,
and 226) are actually 6 1/2" x 8 1/2". Some plates have two
exposures per plate. In these cases no attempt has been made to
give each exposure its own image number.
Prints have been made of some of the glass plates; these are in
the beginning of Series 2, Prints, and have the same image number
as the glass plates. Likewise prints that have been identified
from these plates have been placed at the beginning of Series 2
and given the same image number as the plates.
Box 90. (4" x 5") RESTRICTIONS APPLY
These appear to be the work of an amateur photographer, late 19th

scenes (both interior and exterior) and trying different
techniques. Some "action" pictures look posed; some plates show
movement during exposure.
